LOHWASSER "I CHARLOTTE Dan Allen Lohwasser I lost his lengthy and courageous battle with cancer on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at the age of 53. A native of Richmond, Dan resided in Charlotte for the past 17 years. A decorated Vietnam veteran, he valiantly served his country as a helicopter pilot. Dan subsequently began his career at the Raleigh News and Observer while attending the University of North CarolinaChapel Hill, where he graduated in December 1974 with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism.

Dan continued his illustrious career with the United Press International in 1975 as a general news and sports reporter in Raleigh and was promoted to Charlotte bureau manager. He was named UPI's Carolinas sports editor and held that position until October 1984, when he joined The Charlotte Observer. While with UPI, he was a regular on the annual Atlantic Coast Conference football writers tour and at the ACC basketball tournament. He also covered the court martial of Robert Garwood, the only American soldier tried for aiding and abetting the enemy during the Vietnam War, as well as several other stories that received national recognition. In January 1986, Dan joined Muhleman Marketing and was intensely involved with Jerry Richardson as he began his quest to obtain the NFL Carolina Panthers and the ownership group to procure the first-ever NBA franchise in Charlotte.

He also worked closely with Rick Hendrick, a client and perfriend, during his tenure at Muhleman. He joined forces with Hendrick Motorsports in July 1998 as marketing director. His primary achievements included securing sponsorhips for the four Winston Cup teams, two Busch Grand National teams and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams. Dan was awarded the Robert Gee Award of Excellence in 2000. This prestigious honor is awarded annually to the Hendrick Motorsports team member best displaying outstanding job performance, leadership, teamwork and contributions above and beyond expectations in order to help the organization succeed.

Unselfish generous, he exemplified a true humanitarian. These endearing qualities touched the lives of all who knew and loved him. It was his engaging personality that made him so popular; he greeted adversity with a smile, and his quick wit often brought calm to a tense situation. As a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son and friend, he is dearly loved and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Paula J.
